On 31st of May 2023 casino Astar ceased operations at Best Western hotel in Batumi. The casino was opened only last spring in 2022, however, investors decided to close the land-based casino business. Astar casino was initially focused on Chinese tables games, such as Baccarat and Nui Nui, and expected numbers of Asian visitors never arrived at Batumi, making it difficult to cover large operating expenses and government taxes.
Batumi casinos are operating in a highly competitive environment, with players expecting large discounts on losses, and junket managers also taking a share of casino revenue. The fierce competition over local players meant the casino and slot hall did not turn profitable for investors, especially following unexpected gaming tax hike in January 2023.
